Essential Books

The second edition of this highly successful and popular book has been thoroughly revised to ensure the content remains completely up to date and accurate.
With 50 new questions, "FRCS General Surgery Section 1: 500 SBAs and EMIs" offers the most relevant and comprehensive set of practice questions for trainees preparing for the exam.
Chapters are mapped to the syllabus to deliver structured revision in all the key topics tested in the exam. Featuring a wealth of practice questions and fully descriptive answers, this book provides the essential revision tool to maximise chances of success.
500 SBA and EMI scenario based questions reflecting the formats encountered in the exam. Answers feature concise, case-based descriptions to consolidate knowledge. Extensive evidence-based referencing to relate theory to clinical practice. Visually-enhanced answers to improve understanding of key concepts.

This revision book is an aid to those preparing for the FRCS General Surgery Section 1. The topics and chapters are taken directly from the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum.
The philosophy of this book is to focus on the level of knowledge and the approach that would be expected of the better candidates as they approach the end of their training and make the transition into consultants.
In addition to the acquisition of knowledge through the process of tackling questions, the book will hopefully identify to the reader, areas of gaps in their knowledge base for which further study is required.
Various techniques including the use of diagrams and tables are utilised to explain key facts. As per the curriculum, the book is organised into chapters in accordance with the syllabus, allowing less familiar topics such as relevant aspects in urology and gynaecology to be covered.
Topics such as Gastrointestinal, HPB, Vascular, Breast and Endocrine Surgery are understandably covered in greater depth given their common occurrence in the examination. Questions are presented in a single best answer and extended matching item format, mirroring those that the candidate will encounter during the examination.
This book is useful for candidates in both the early and late stages of their revision for the examination. Early familiarity with the range and depth of topics may help guide further self-directed learning. Those in the latter stages of revision can use the questions to build confidence and reinforce their knowledge. Each chapter is written by an authoritative author alongside the book editor to ensure it is relevant and informative for the reader.

Featuring over 600 Single Best Answers (SBAs) and Extended Matching Items (EMIs) written by successful candidates of the General Surgery FRCS, this resource ensures high-quality self-assessment.
Split into chapters on key sub-specialties, all questions are mapped to the surgical curriculum and mirror the level of detail required to succeed in the Section 1 examination.
Each chapter is clearly structured with all SBA and EMI questions first, followed by corresponding answers, detailed explanations and relevant further reading sources. This layout enables trainees to assess their level of knowledge, and practise the technique and approach needed for the examination. Providing high-quality questions and expert guidance, this resource is a comprehensive revision tool for senior trainees in General Surgery.
